PRESS RELEASE FROM THE CITY OF CHANDLER:
Two City of Chandler projects earn prestigious Crescordia awards for Environmental Excellence from Valley Forward Association
The City of Chandler was honored on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, with two first-place Crescordia prizes in Arizona’s oldest and most prestigious competition focusing exclusively on environmental initiatives. The Crescordia is the top prize in the Environmental Excellence Awards, which are presented annually by the Valley Forward Association.
Chandler City Hall earned a Crescordia Award in the Civic Buildings and Structures category, and the Downtown Chandler Redevelopment Plan was recognized in the Livable Communities (Public Policy/Plans) category. A third City project, the South Arizona Avenue Improvement Project earned an Award of Merit in the Public Sector Site Development and Landscape category.
Crescordia is a Greek term meaning, “to grow in harmony,” and according to Valley Forward “the awards set standards for achieving a balance between the built and natural environment in the region’s physical, technical, social and aesthetic development.”
Winners were announced Saturday evening at Valley Forward’s awards gala held in partnership with SRP and attended by more than 600 community leaders at The Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale. The awards have become especially competitive among Valley municipalities and government agencies. This year more than 130 entries were submitted by Valley businesses, government agencies and non-profit organizations. There were 19 first-place Crescordia awards and 30 runner-up Awards of Merit presented.
Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny attended the festivities and accepted the awards on behalf of the City and the architectural, engineering, construction and landscape design firms involved with the projects.
“Earning this recognition from Valley Forward is extremely gratifying for Chandler and our project partners,” said Mayor Tibshraeny. “It is further validation of our vision and efforts in recent years to create an environmentally friendly urban area that the residents of Chandler can be proud to visit and experience.”
He noted that each of these projects is important and worthy of praise on their own, and added, “Collectively, they have successfully transformed the downtown Chandler area into a walkable and lively destination for dining, art and culture. It’s an exciting time for our community.”
