The award was for sponsoring the City in the national All-America City award competition held in Kansas City in June. Rather than use taxpayer money to send the delegation to Kansas City, the City turned to community businesses to support and fund the trip. Achen-Gardner Construction was one of about fifteen Chandler businesses to provide financial support.

The All America City award is a national competition that recognizes communities whose citizens work together to identify and solve community-wide challenges and achieve uncommon and sustaining results. Each year hundreds of cities submit applications. Chandler was selected as one of 27 finalists to present its story in the final competition in Kansas City and was voted one of the ten winners of 2010. The three community projects Chandler highlighted were: ICAN (Chandler’s youth program), the CARE Center (providing medical care to Chandler’s students), and the Chandler Heights Community Facilities (a combined campus including an Environmental Education Center, police substation, and water recharge facility). The presentation highlighted the City and Citizen collaboration that serves the community’s needs.
